Communion Gifts

When we here the word “Communion” a lot of people, especially Christians, think of Sunday Communion wherein members of the church, including pastors, priests, reverends, or ministers, eat bread and drink wine (or grape juice).

In the Catholic religion, the process of Sunday communion, most of the time, is for each member to line up one by one at the walk-way in between the benches towards the priest.  The priest then dip the communion bread known as “Host” into the cup or “chalice” of “wine” chalice and feed the member by his hand, or give the member the bread if the member approaches the priest with his/her palm up.  This is also where the Sacrament of Eucharist is given relevance.

Other Evangelical Christians, however, like the Born Again Christians, or even the Protestants, practices Sunday Communion with a different touch.  On most Born Again Churches, the Pastor or the Church workers distribute the bread and wine (which is not really wine but grape juice) that is placed in small steel cups.  The members then break a very little piece from the bread and get one cup of the wine and together eat the bread and wine simultaneously.

For the Latter Day Saints movement, most of their churches, communion Sunday is often practiced similarly as that of Protestants and other Evangelical movements, and some, especially the early Mormons, use fermented wine.

One thing is for sure, despite the differences of how these Christian denominations practice their Sunday Communions, the concept of eating bread and wine is because of what Christ has taught and done.  The practice of Communion originated at the Last Supper when Jesus said to his disciples, “Take this bread. It is my body.”-- “Take this and drink. This is my blood. Do this in memory of me.”  This signified that the Apostles have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and cleansed their sins with His blood.
